Windshape_nArchitects

Windshape was conceived as two eight-meter-high pavilions that dynamically changed with the Provençale wind. A vine-like structural network of white plastic pipes, joined together and stretched apart by aluminum collars, emerged from the limestone walls and terraces of Lacoste’s hillside. Fifty kilometers of white polypropylene string was threaded through the lattice to create swaying enclosures. The string was woven into dense regions and surfaces and pinched to define doorways, windows, and spaces for seating.

By varying the degree of tension in the string, nARCHITECTS built Windshape to respond to the wind in several ways, from rhythmic oscillations to fast ripples across its surfaces. During heavy winds, Windshape moved dramatically, and made a hissing sound akin to dozens of jumpropes. The pavilions took on a multitude of temporary forms over the course of the summer, as they billowed in and out, and momentarily came to rest. In this way, the local winds and the Mistral gave shape to constantly mutating structures. The pavilions were illuminated at night against the backdrop of the Marquis de Sade’s castle, and were visible from as far away as the village of Bonnieux, 5 kilometers away.

“Concrete-pod” is the micro-space furniture for private and public use made of the concrete of extremely thin. In the dome, because of its minimal scale, it makes us more sensitive and relax.　  “Concrete-pod” is only made from the fiber reinforced concrete, which is the mixture of white cement and light-weight aggregate and glass fiber. By application of Japanese traditional plasterer’s skill SAKAN, it was plastered on the dome-shaped mould by a trowel. After hardening, the mould of styrofoam was dismantled and removed. The diameter and the height of “Concrete-pod” is 1700mm each, thickness of shell is 15mm only. A minor axis of a hen’s egg is about 40mm and thickness is 400 micron, so it means this concrete-shell is just like an expansion of a hen’s eggshell. Though it’s “hen’s egg thin”, “Concrete-pod” has the enough strength that a grown-up man can climb up. Even when you are in the “Concrete-pod” which is tenderly covered by the concrete-shell, you can feel the outside environment through the number of the holes, so it makes us feel indoor and outdoor at the same time, and takes us to the sensitive feeling and deep relaxation in the nature.

Het monument ter herdenking van de holocaust beslaat 19000 vierkante meter(bijna 3 voetbalvelden) en 2711 donkere betonblokken die van hoogte verschillen. De grafzuilen zijn zo ontworpen om een ongemakkelijke, verwarrende, geïsoleerde en eenzame atmosfeer te creeëren. Het is symbolisch voor de ervaring van de Joodse bevolking tijdens het nazibewind.
